What and how WiFi works - The full meaning of the word Wi-Fi is Wireless Fidelity.  The term Wi-Fi is a trademark of a proprietary organization called the Wi-Fi Alliance.  Wi-Fi is a technology for connecting computers / digital electrical devices to the Internet wirelessly.  Wi-Fi is a popular wireless networking technology that uses wireless waves to connect to high-speed Internet and networks.  This is a wireless LAN standard that is technically known as IEEE 802.11.  Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, video game consoles, smartphones or digital audio players can be connected to the Internet through a wireless network access point.

An area with a Wi-Fi network for Internet access is called a hotspot.  Hotspot is a type of wireless network.  Its data communication speed is very low and the security system is also weak.

Characteristics

Advantages of Wi-Fi:

  • In general its coverage area is 50 to 200 meters wide due to advanced routers and net coverage is also available in a wide range.
  • Its bandwidth is 10 Mbps 50Mbps.
  • Wi-Fi is cheaper than LAN.
  • A computer to connect to a Wi-Fi LANWireless network interface controller is required.
  • Connecting a digital subscriber line modem and a Wi-Fi access point to the router gives Internet access to all devices within its reach.
  • Wi-Fi devices can be connected in add-on mode in addition to routers for client-to-client connections.

Disadvantages of Wi-Fi:

Data transfer is quite slow.  Network signals can be jammed if there are too many users at once. It is difficult to get coverage without specific areas. There are network security risks.
